YORK REGION, Ont. CUPE Local 905, and its 4300 municipal members throughout the Region of York, are sending a clear and strong message to striking CUPE 79 and 416 workers in Toronto and CUPE 82 and 543 members in Windsor: We support you 100 per cent.
On behalf of our members in CUPE 905, I am sending the clearest message that we support our brothers and sisters who have been forced onto the picket line. Our expectations in York Region are that we look towards a positive round of bargaining in 2010, said Derek Bakshi, president of CUPE Local 905.
The on-going assault on public service workers is unacceptable. The inability of employers to curb wasteful spending during the recent downturn in the economy has resulted in the public service sectors being made the scapegoat to reduce expenditures.
Further, a recent press release by the Mayor of Markham requesting intervention from the province to mandate our collective agreements is another example of the public services being the target. Our next round of bargaining for our twenty collective agreements is set to start in 2010 and we expect a strong push back from our employers similar to Local 79 and 416 Bakshi said.
CUPE Local 905 supports our fellow brothers and sisters to the south in their struggle to fight back concessions and support their efforts to negotiate a fair and reasonable wage increase, concluded Bakshi.
