BRACEBRIDGE, Ont. — Jack Layton is coming to Parry Sound-Muskoka on Wednesday, March 18 to hear from residents about how the community is coping with the current economic crisis.
The meeting, sponsored by CUPE and the Parry Sound-Muskoka NDP Riding Association, will be held at Nipissing University, 125 Wellington Street, Bracebridge. Doors open at 7 p.m.
This is a great opportunity for people to speak directly to Jack about issues that concern them, says Sara Hall, president of the Parry Sound-Muskoka Riding Association. Jack is not coming here to speak so much as he is coming to listen.
People across the country are struggling to deal with job losses and a slowing economy, said Grant Dart, president of CUPE 1813. Parry Sound-Muskoka’s small manufacturing base has been so hard hit over the last number of years, he said, noting that more and more people are relying on seasonal, service-oriented jobs.
In Bracebridge alone more than 700 manufacturing jobs have been lost since 2001 while the fastest growing economic sector in Muskoka is the low-paying retail wage sector.
