TORONTO, Ont. – At the Ontario NDP leadership convention in Hamilton next weekend, CUPE Ontario President Sid Ryan will be casting his ballot in support of Hamilton Centre MPP Andrea Horwath.

“After considering the platforms of all of the candidates, I have come to believe that Andrea Horwath will be the leader the Ontario NDP needs going into the next provincial election,” Ryan said. “Since her first by-election win, I have been impressed with her knowledge and understanding of the issues, her energy, her commitment and the hope she represents for working people, especially members of unions like CUPE where about 60% of our members are women.”

In her first year in office, Horwath demonstrated her interest in workers’ issues with province-wide hearings on pensions, Ryan said, noting that CUPE Ontario Secretary-Treasurer Fred Hahn has also added his name to the list of Horwath endorsers.

“Andrea Horwath represents positive change, change that our province needs in these difficult times. If we can elect a young, energetic, intelligent woman who will stand in bright contrast to the other party leaders, then I say let’s do it.”

With more than 200,000 members, CUPE is the largest union in Ontario. CUPE members work in municipalities, schools, universities, hospitals, long-term care facilities, social services, libraries, emergency services, electrical utilities, child care, airlines and more.
