As CUPE Ontario and its locals get set to celebrate the 8th annual Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day, the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care (OCBCC) will celebrate the day by presenting an award to the creator of Quebec’s $7/ day child care system.

Pauline Marois, Leader of the Parti Quebecois, will be honoured for her work as the Minister responsible for implementing Quebec’s affordable child care system, the most affordable, most accessible child care program in the country.

Ten years after implementing Quebec’s $7 / day child care system, the benefits to Quebec society are evident. Affordable child care has helped Quebec lower child poverty by 50%, children’s test scores are higher, birth rates are up, and increased tax revenues from working parents have paid for 40% of Quebec’s program.

Ten years later, the evidence is clear. Investing in child care pays off. In Ontario, the OCBCC and CUPE Ontario have continued to advocate for a similar child care system.

Marois will accept her award this Wednesday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Ryerson University in the Library Building, Room 72, located at Gould and Victoria, Toronto.
