NORTH BAY, Ont. Front line workers in North Bay will hold a 12-hour Rock-a-thon this Thursday, June 26 to press the provincial government to bring in a regulated minimum standard of hands-on care for residents in long-term care homes. Sid Ryan, Ontario President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) will join the rockers for a media conference at 12:30 p.m.
Workers, families of nursing home residents and community allies will gather at the corner of Olive and Cassells Streets with rocking chairs for the rocking marathon, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The event is being sponsored by CUPE 146 and the CUPE District Council.
Last week, the Ontario Minister of Health broke another promise by not introducing a standard of care with the release of yet another report on conditions and care levels in long-term care facilities.
Seniors in homes whose average age is 82 don’t have time to wait for the minister to make the right decision, says Ryan. CUPE Ontario and its locals like CUPE 146 are continuing to press David Caplan, the new health minister, for a regulated standard of care and staffing standards.
