PORT PERRY, Ont. — CUPE 2936.07/11, representing close to 200 frontline staff at Community Living Durham North, is inviting parents and families to an information meeting about possible job action that could begin June 23.

The union and employer are meeting today to try to negotiate a collective agreement with the help of a mediator.  They will be in a legal strike/lockout position as of June 23, 2007.

“We are hopeful that we can make progress today toward a fair collective agreement,” said Jill Coffey, bargaining unit chair and a member of the negotiating team.  “If our employer insists on keeping an unacceptable offer on the table, however, we will have to continue our preparations for strike action.”

The meeting will be held at the Prince Albert Hall on Jeffrey Street in Prince Albert at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2007.

Wages are an issue for CUPE 2936 members. Many full-timers have at least two jobs, while part-timers are carrying two or three jobs at a time, Coffey said. Yet, to date the employer has tabled a wage offer that falls well short of the pattern being established by other community living agencies.

Health and safety in the workplace is another outstanding issue for developmental services workers right across the province.
