Delegates to the Canadian Labour Congress Convention in Toronto took to the streets on Monday May 26th to celebrate the launch of “Equality Once and For All: A Campaign for Women’s Economic Equality”. Over 1,000 delegates, including CUPE Ontario members led by Secretary-Treasurer Fred Hahn, took part in a march led by CLC vice-presidents Barbara Byers and Marie Clarke Walker.

Speakers at the rally pointed out that women working full-time earn only 70% as much as men. Under the same conditions, women of colour earn only 64% and Aboriginal women only 46% as much as men. Unionized women earn 93% of the wage of unionized men.

The CLC launched the “Equality Once and For All Campaign” to draw attention to disparities in women’s incomes and highlight the benefits of belonging to a union.
