Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. Children’s Aid Society of Algoma workers, members of CUPE 1880, met on Wednesday with two National CUPE representatives.
We feel it is time to talk to our national union, said Lee Ann Pettenuzzo, vice-president of CUPE 1880.
Our negotiations broke down on April 29 when our employer refused to discuss any further the proposals we had tabled. As a result, we asked for a conciliator to be assigned. Now is the time for us to discuss with the national union what can be done between now and May 29 when we meet with the conciliator.
It’s very comforting to know that while we’re having such a hard time with the employer, we have the full weight, resources and support of the country’s largest union on our side, Pettenuzzo concluded.
CUPE 1880 is trying to negotiate a fair contract that includes health and safety and workload clauses.
