Black River-Matheson, ON – Workers locked out by the Municipality of Black River-Matheson are inviting the community to a barbeque and rally on Saturday, September 6, at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Railway Street, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The members of CUPE Local 1490 are hosting the barbeque to share information about the lockout and encourage council to return to the bargaining table.
“We are very dedicated to our community and want to get back to work,” says Sonya Moffat, president of CUPE Local 1490. “There is a lot of misinformation out there, and this is an opportunity to bring the community together, set the record straight, and tell council that we all want to get back to work for the people of Black River-Matheson.”
Municipal workers were locked out August 11, despite the union offering further bargaining dates. Instead of reaching a fair agreement, council is demanding changes to shift scheduling that will prevent several workers from ever having a weekend with family, and that are expected to significantly increase cost to the municipality in the long run.
Media are invited to join us, and guest speakers will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m.
