WHITBY, Ont. – Paul Moist, CUPE National President, will lead a ‘Send Dispute to Arbitration’ rally for the striking Durham ‘inside’ municipal workers at Durham Regional Headquarters, 605 Rossland Road East, Whitby, on Wednesday, July 2, at 12:30 p.m.
“Once again, we are urging Durham Region to send this dispute to arbitration and end this unnecessary strike,” said Pauline Hopley, president of CUPE 1764. “The outstanding issues only affect 290 EMS workers, but all of Durham is affected by the dispute and it makes no sense for council to say no to arbitration when Durham residents are being denied important services like child care, social services, court services, public health and other public services.”

The workers have been on strike since Thursday, June 19, over the employer’s attempt to target EMS workers’ sick leave provisions. The union offered the arbitration option to the employer prior to the strike, but management refused pushing the workers to strike. Sending the dispute to arbitration will allow a neutral third party to resolve the outstanding issues and end the strike.
