Calls on Durham council and management to act and end the strike
WHITBY, Ont. – In an effort to end a strike that’s affecting public services in the Region of Durham, the union, representing the 1500 striking ‘inside’ municipal workers, has offered Durham Region a settlement package that would end the management/labour dispute.
“We have sent to management, and all the councillors, a proposal that we believe would end this dispute,” said Pauline Hopley, president of CUPE 1764. “We’ve asked management to return to the bargaining table after the employer’s ‘final’ offer was turned down by our members, but management has not responded to that request. Instead of prolonging this unnecessary strike, we have offered them a package that would allow our members to go back to work and serve the residents of Durham.”
“Management’s unwillingness to return to the table will prolong the strike and further affect our community, and we are taking the initiative to help end this strike by sending the Region an offer that management and council should not refuse,” said Hopley. “We’ve taken the first step to move toward a resolution and we are asking council and management to do the same and end this unnecessary strike.”
