WINDSOR, ON – Fred Hahn was acclaimed to a third two-year term as President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario in Windsor at the 51st annual convention of the province’s largest union.
Originally from Tillsonburg, Ontario, 46-year-old Fred Hahn is a social worker from Toronto and the first openly gay man to be elected to lead an Ontario trade union. Hahn has been an active CUPE member since 1990. He was first elected to the CUPE Ontario Executive Board in 1998 and was elected Secretary-Treasurer in 2006. He was first elected President in 2010.
“I am enormously proud to be CUPE Ontario president,” said Hahn, who received a standing ovation from more than 1000 delegates attending the convention. “The energy in this room, in our union, is what fuels our movement. Together, we can stop Tim Hudak, we can build our province and we can reclaim our public services.”
Delegates gave the Board a strong mandate to fight to defend the public services all Ontarians rely on, fight poverty, and to build a fairer province for everyone.
Candace Rennick, a long-term care worker from Peterborough, was re-elected to the position of Secretary-Treasurer.
