KITCHENER, Ont. – Front-line ‘outside’ municipal workers with the City of Kitchener, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will be sponsoring the 2014 Hot Shots Street Hockey Tournament on
Saturday, May 31, 2014. The 9th annual event helps Family and Children’s Services Foundation raise funds to
send local children in need to camp this summer.
“We are delighted to be part of an event that helps children in need,” said Doug Kudoba, vice-president of CUPE 68. “As outside workers for the City of Kitchener we provide public services that help our residents enjoy our city, parks, community centres and outdoor spaces – sponsoring the Hot Shots Hockey Tournament is our union’s way of helping out children in need and hosting an outdoor event for all our residents to participate and enjoy.
CUPE 68 represents 300 ‘outside’ municipal workers with the City of Kitchener who provide services in public works, sewer and wastewater, parks, recreation, outdoor pools and rinks, golf courses, community arenas, and the maintenance of City’s vehicles and equipment as well as the Region of Waterloo Mobility Plus’s vehicles. Kudoba,
a 23 year veteran municipal worker, is a purchaser with the city who is an active committee member of the Hot Shots Hockey Tournament board.
“As a committee member I know how the event helps children in need and what an important role Family and Children’s Services play in our community,” continued Kudoba. “Our union is part of the community and we wanted to play a more formal role to help support the event and raise funds for kids in need so they can have a memorable summer camp experience, gain confidence, learn life skills and build self esteem.”
“In addition to being the lead sponsor, our members are volunteering for the event and we are aiming to have a couple of teams participate in the tournament,” continued Kudoba. “We are encouraging everyone to bring their families and friends to participate in the event. It is not too late to form a team or you can come and enjoy all the other activities – from kid’s games, entertainment, prizes, to silent auction, BBQ and Canada’s favourite pastime, hockey.” CUPE 791, representing ‘inside’ workers and staff at Waterloo Wellington Community Care Access Centre, is also contributing to the event and will volunteer and participate in Saturday’s event.
The Family and Children’s Services Foundation is the fundraising arm of Family and Children’s Services of Waterloo Region. The foundation raises funds in the community to provide programs promoting healing, learning and growing that are not funded through government subsidies. The Hot Shots Street Hockey Tournament is one of the fundraising events that helps raise funds to provide children living in the community with summer camp experiences. Proceeds from last year helped the foundation purchase over 500 weeks of summer camp for children in need. This year’s event will take place at Kitchener Aud, 400 East Avenue, Kitchener.
