Community rally set for Tuesday, April 22, at noon, at Orazietti’s office
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Inaction by Sault Ste. Marie MPP David Orazietti to help rescind cuts to resident care at the FJ Davey has prompted a community rally next week at the MPP’s constituency office.
The rally planned for Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at noon, at 432 Great Northern Road, is intended as a reminder to Orazietti that he made a commitment to take action, says Candace Rennick, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario secretary-treasurer. “We know residents’ families and friends are as concerned about the cuts to care as we are. Now, we need the MPP to step up and take action. Surely, he wants the nursing home administration to account for why care cuts are happening when there has been no cut to provincial funding to the home.”
Residents’ family members and FJ Davey Home direct care staff met with Orazietti in late March to review the impact cuts will have to resident care hours being made by the nursing administration. At that meeting, Orazietti committed to take action. But, to date, other than a media release issued by Orazietti to underscore that his government has not cut funding to the FJ Davey Home, there has been cold silence from the MPP.
Today, Rennick released an open letter to Orazietti again calling on him to take action to rescind the care cuts and show he cares about the well-being of FJ Davey Home residents. A copy of the letter is available at the following link: https://cupe.on.ca/open-to-orazietti-fj-davey-home-care-cuts. Rennick also encouraged Orazietti and his government to increase funding for resident care in the provincial budget being released on May 1.
In addition to the April 22 rally at Orazietti’s office, on Saturday (April 19) FJ Davey Home staff are planning to continue to raise awareness of the cuts to nursing, personal care, dietary and environmental cleaning, with visiting resident family and friends. For several hours (between 11:00 a.m. – 1:00.p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) this Saturday, care staff will be doling out Easter treats, along with information about the cuts to care.
