PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – Trent University’s new contract with the multinational corporation Compass Group Canada, threatens lay-offs, seniority rights and wage cuts for the campuses’ already modestly paid food service workers, says Candace Rennick, Secretary-Treasurer for CUPE Ontario.
The CUPE leader will join food service worker, Judie Gates and Braden Freer, President, Trent Central Student Association to hold a press conference exposing the threat that appears to target the oldest workers. The trio will be joined by other colleagues, students and faculty in support of these workers who are seen as an important part of campus life.
After April 25, the university’s cooks, bakers, servers, cashiers, porters and assistants have been threatened with drastic reductions to wages and benefits, losses of seniority and cuts to full-time positions. The union is set to meet with the Compass Group on Thursday in hopes of coming to a resolution.
