PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – Contract talks on Monday between Local 3908 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and Trent University’s administration have resulted in a tentative agreement for the university’s contract faculty.
The bargaining team for CUPE Local 3908 will recommend that the union’s members vote to ratify the agreement in an online ratification vote that closes April 10; results will be announced on April 11.
CUPE Local 3908 represents approximately 300 course instructors, clinical instructors, markers, tutorial/workshop leaders, English-as-a-second-language instructors, academic skills counsellors and lab demonstrators at Trent University.
“We believe that the agreement we reached meets the mandate that our members set for us,” said Stephen Horner, the president of CUPE 3908.
“Our members made it clear that they wanted to see a new agreement recognizing the important contributions that contract faculty make at Trent.
Horner continued: “We need to move towards a model that acknowledges non-tenure contract faculty have become an important part of the way the university fulfills its teaching mission and the university must support them appropriately.
“Universities that do this will see the benefits in terms of a higher quality of education and better student experience.”
Details of the agreement will not be released until members of CUPE Local 3908 and Trent University’s Board of Governors have reviewed them and put the contract to a vote for ratification.
