Supporters from across Northern Ontario expected to join striking CUPE 4616 members
BONFIELD, Ont. – Six months after being forced to go on a defensive strike, Township of Bonfield employees, members of Local 4616 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 4616) are inviting members of the community to join them tomorrow, Saturday, February 1, as they go ‘Fishing for a Fair Deal’.
The striking Bonfield workers will be joined by supporters from across Northern Ontario, as well as CUPE National President Paul Moist, CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn and Henri Giroux, President of the North Bay CUPE District Council.
Saturday’s events will take place at the Bonfield Sunnyside Camp, which is located at 126 Sunnyside Road in Bonfield, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to ice fishing and a fish fry, there will also be sleigh rides and a bonfire. All activities are free of charge.
CUPE 4616 members were forced to go on strike August 1 after the Mayor and Council demanded major concessions from members which, if agreed to, would have jeopardized vital public services and good jobs in the community. Since that time, the Mayor and Council have refused to bargain with the union, opting instead to demand the union accept virtually all of their conditions in exchange for returning to the table.
