CLARENCE-ROCKLAND, Ont. – The City of Clarence-Rockland refused an offer of settlement proposed by the Union which would have resulted in savings for taxpayers while meeting the needs of municipal employees.

The conciliator is expected to inform the Ministry of Labour that he was unable to resolve the dispute and will announce a date by which the parties will be free to engage in a strike or lockout in early February.

“We wanted to work together to find solutions that are just and equitable for both parties,” explained Jean-Marc Bézaire, CUPE National Representative. “The City’s refusal was accompanied by a hardening of their position to delete entire provisions from the Collective Agreement,” he added.

“They showed absolutely no interest in finding solutions, even if our proposals are modest and reasonable,” explained Mr. Bézaire. “Should we believe that the problem is political in nature?” he mused.

Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 503 represents all full-time municipal employees at the City of Clarence-Rockland, namely: public works road crews clearing winter snow, arena operators, mechanics, child care educators in child care centres, operators at the waste disposal site, tax collection, accounts receivable and accounts payable staff, urban planners, building inspection officers, by-law officers, and other administrative support staff at City offices.
