TORONTO, Ont. — As Toronto shifts from restoring power to cleaning up the damage caused by last month’s massive ice storm, the Toronto Civic Employees Union (TCEU), Local 416 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 416) is urging others to follow their lead and help storm-stricken Torontonians restock their cupboards.
“I am proud to announce the members of CUPE 416 have authorized a donation of $5,000 to the Daily Bread Food Bank, and our members are challenging other unions in Toronto to step up and help their fellow Torontonians in need,” said Dave Hewitt, First Vice-President of CUPE 416.
“Over the past week, as hundreds of people lined up across the city in the hopes of obtaining a grocery gift card to restock their pantries, we’ve all seen that too many Torontonians are just one emergency away from being in crisis—that’s deeply troubling in a community as wealthy and prosperous as ours,” he added.
Local 416 is also issuing an appeal and challenge to other local unions to donate to Daily Bread, so that every resident affected by the ice storm and power outage can restock their refrigerators and pantries.
“The need is great and too much for any one person or organization. But if our sisters and brothers in Toronto’s labour movement join us, I’m confident we can have a major positive impact on peoples’ lives,” said Hewitt.
CUPE 416 represents the City of Toronto’s ‘outside’ workforce, including solid waste management, Emergency Medical Services, Toronto Parking Authority, Toronto Port Authority, Corporate Services, Parks and Recreation, water/waste water division, transportation, Animal Services and Enwave staff.
