WINDSOR, Ont. – Groundskeepers, maintenance staff and food service staff at the University of Windsor, members of Local 1001 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 1001) have, today, ratified a three-year collective agreement.
“We are pleased to have successfully concluded bargaining with the university administration,” said David Montgomery, President of CUPE 1001
“My greatest hope, now, is that university administration immediately turns its attention to returning to the bargaining table to conclude bargaining with our striking sisters and brothers from CUPE 1393,” he added.
Among other things, the three-year agreement contains improvements to benefits, job security, and a wage increase of one per cent in each year of the contract.
In addition to saluting Local 1001’s bargaining committee for their efforts to successfully conclude negotiations, Montgomery also thanked Local 1001 members, and members of the campus community, for their support and patience during bargaining.
“Achieving a settlement would have been much more difficult without the extraordinary support our members have received from students, faculty and our co-workers,” said Montgomery.
CUPE 1001 represents more than 300 full-time and part-time groundskeepers, maintenance and food service workers at the University of Windsor. Currently, members of CUPE 1393, which represents skilled trades and professional staff at the university, have been on strike for two weeks.
“The university needs to get its heels out of the ground and sit down to negotiate – without preconditions – with Local 1393. Our members remain100 per cent committed to our sisters and brothers, and we will continue to support them until they achieve a fair settlement,” said Montgomery.
