When an Ottawa city bus tragically collided with a Via train earlier this week, members of CUPE Local 5500 were the first on the scene to begin triage and treating injured passengers.
“Our hearts go out to the everyone in this tragic crash and to their families,” said CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn. “I am also extremely proud of the work our members did to help the injured.”
CUPE 5500 members, who work as transit supervisors and special constables, were on scene immediately and provided emergency support for seven minutes before paramedics, members of Local 503, arrived to provide emergency medical services.
The collision between the train and the OC Transpo double-decker bus killed five passengers and the bus driver.
