Kingston’s mayor and council changed course this week and voted against privatizing the Belle Park Fairways golf course.

Council made the decision after learning about the cost of the RFP and to avoid liability from improper management of the former landfil by a third-party operator, reports Bill Hutchins in Kingston Heritage.

“The financial risk to the municipality if we don’t properly manage this site is huge,” city solicitor Hal Linscott told the council.

Linscott reminded council that in the 1990s the landed in court because of mismanagement of the site. “This city was, in many ways, the laughing stock of the country,” he said, concluding that “the financial risk is so significant it’s essential the city continue to operate this site where it has the controls.
