Nearly 400 CUPE Ontario members and their families brought sunshine to a rainy day in Thorold at the third annual CUPE Family Day in the Park.

The free event, organized by the CUPE Niagara District Council, included a barbeque, refreshments, bouncy castles and live entertainment by classic rock cover band Renegade.

“Our members live, work and raise their families here. It’s great to be here with them and their kids today, celebrating our community and our ongoing stand for fairness for working people,” said CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn, who will join the fun on Saturday afternoon. “It was especially nice meeting the families of the CUPE members in this arena who came to join them today.”

Because of rain the event was relocated to the Thorold Arena, which is maintained by members of CUPE Local 151.

“This has been a fantastic event. There are members here I haven’t seen before, so the message must have gotten out,” said District Council President Susan Schmidt. “There are lots of younger workers here with their kids.”

Food and beverages left over from the event were donated to Gillian’s Place in St. Catharines.
