When I think of labour leaders, tough-talking, loud and abrasive types come to mind like Ken Lewenza, Buzz Hargrove and Wayne Samuelson. They bashed metal or ran machines in factories and their vehicles of choice were pickup trucks and sturdy-looking North American cars.

Marc Xuereb, president of the Waterloo Regional Labour Council, doesn’t fit this stereotype. He’s soft-spoken, polite and intellectual and arrived for a recent chat at the Morning Glory Café in Kitchener on a bicycle.
