Despite having a day declared to honour the struggle of people with disabilities, adults with disabilities continue to be the most unemployed group in our society.  People with disabilities are routinely subjected to exclusion, poverty and isolation.

In Canada, 12% of Canadians have a disability.  That number increases to 33% for Aboriginal/First Nations People.  Over 55% of adults with disabilities are unemployed.  For women with disabilities the rate is 75%.  When employed, workers with disabilities struggle with accommodation and discrimination.

At our Ontario Human Rights Conference on Poverty our newly elected Workers with Disabilities Committee has committed to an aggressive agenda to challenge a number of workplace issues for workers with disabilities and to educate the Ontario membership on the barriers facing those workers.   We call upon all CUPE members to join in the struggle for full equality.
