Toronto, ON – Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) from every corner of Ontario will march from their 50th Convention to the Ministry of Labour at noon tomorrow, Friday, for a rally in defense of collective bargaining rights.
The workers, who provide public services in municipalities, school boards, social services, health care and universities, are being moved to action by recent legislative attacks on the rights of workers to free collective bargaining. They will call on the provincial government to reject calls from some employer groups to make legislative changes that will remove the right to independent third-party arbitration for workers in essential services, and oppose provincial and federal Conservative attacks on the ability of unions to effectively bargain for and represent their workers.
“I want to be clear that if any government moves to attack the fundamental fairness of contract arbitration – if they dare to go after our members who have already had their basic right to strike stripped from them, as the Liberals did with Bill 115 – that our entire union will defend the rights of those members,” said CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn.
