Walkerton, Ont. Roads maintenance workers at the County of Bruce voted 100 per cent in favour of a strike, if a fair agreement cannot be reached with the County. The 27 workers, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), are fighting for wage parity with workers at neighbouring counties.
With a unanimous vote, we are sending a strong message to the employer resolve the wage parity issue now, said Mike Dunn, CUPE national representative for Local 1654. Management must come to conciliation recognizing that our members are united and determined to bridge the wage and benefits gap with other counties.
Conciliation talks are scheduled for Friday, November 30. The workers provide roads maintenance services including snow removal, sanding, sign painting and road repairs. Their last contract expired on December 31, 2006.
