Agreement approved by City Council ensures stability and superior service for

state-of-the-art aquatics centre, says CUPE 543 President Mark Vander Voort

WINDSOR, Ont. – An agreement approved today by Windsor City Council will ensure the City’s new state-of-the-art aquatics centre will remain directly-owned and operated by the City.

“We’re very pleased that an agreement we spent many weeks negotiating has been approved today by Council,” said Mark Vander Voort, President of Local 543 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 543), which represents City of Windsor ‘inside’ workers, including aquatics and recreation staff.

The agreement negotiated between Local 543 and the City of Windsor provides significant cost savings to Windsor taxpayers, while protecting quality public services and the core principles of fairness and pay equity.

“We’re glad that the City came to the table to negotiate an agreement that will provide stability and superior service for the Windsor Aquatics Centre,” said Vander Voort.

“This is an investment in the city. It’s a win for Windsorites that I believe demonstrates our commitment to protecting vital public services that all residents appreciate and depend on,” he added.

The new agreement is subject to ratification by Local 543’s members. This will take place once contract negotiations between the City and Local 543 have successfully concluded.

“This agreement demonstrates that when Local 543 and the City roll up their sleeves and work towards solutions, we can negotiate agreements that work for residents, protect public services and work for the people who deliver public services. We look forward to doing more of the same with the City of Windsor in the weeks to come,” said Vander Voort.
