HANOVER, Ont. –Town of Hanover municipal workers, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), recently delivered strong and unanimous support for their bargaining committee to achieve a fair contract on behalf of the front line municipal employees serving the residents of Hanover.

“Our members are united and they are sending a strong message to management that front line workers want a fair deal,” said Jim Keenan, CUPE national representative. “While management is pushing for concessions, our members are more focused on achieving a fair deal so they can continue to do what they do best – provide vital public services to Hanover residents.”

CUPE 255 represents workers who provide services in public works, recreation, cemetery, sewer and water. “These dedicated staff work and live in this community and they know how these services help their community,” continued Keenan. “They are proud of their work and all they are looking for is a fair deal that respects their work.”

CUPE 255 applied for the services of a provincial conciliator to assist both parties in reaching a fair contract, as talks have reached an impasse. Conciliation talks are scheduled for August 9. The workers’ last contract expired on March 31, 2012. “Our members are committed to reaching a fair deal and the last thing they want is a labour dispute that will disrupt services,” said Keenan. “Their unanimous support for the bargaining team speaks to their determination to reach a negotiated settlement and we are urging management to negotiate a fair contract so workers can go back to focusing on providing important services to Hanover residents.
