PORT HOPE, Ont. – In an era of continual cutbacks and constant “doom and gloom” economic news, Port Hope library workers took matters into their own hands and voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) to improve job security and have Canada’s largest union on their side.
“Job security is especially important when there is constant news of cutbacks and economic uncertainty,” said Debbie Oldfield, CUPE organizing representative. “CUPE offers workers an opportunity to create balance in their workplaces so workers have a voice and a legitimate avenue to deal with setbacks.”
CUPE represents library workers in Ontario and across Canada, including neighbouring municipalities like Cobourg, Ajax, Oshawa, and Pickering. “We understand the needs and challenges facing library workers and we have the resources and staff to help our newest members achieve their goals,” continued Oldfield. “We are looking forward to working with our 14 new members and we welcome them to the CUPE family.”
CUPE represents over 615,000 members in different sectors, including libraries, municipalities, hospitals, universities, schools, social services, transportation and other sectors.
