PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – Retirement home workers at Sherbrooke Heights in Peterborough recently voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) to improve their working conditions.
“Our newest members are happy to be part of CUPE and, like all workers, want to be treated fairly and with respect,” said Debbie Oldfield, CUPE organizing representative. “An improved work environment creates a more positive, balanced workplace and, in this case, a healthier retirement living for the seniors at Sherbrooke Heights.”
“The 35 workers from Sherbrooke Heights will benefit from our expertise and experience, as CUPE is a leader in representing workers in seniors’ homes and long-term care facilities,” continued Oldfield. “We are fully aware of the daily challenges these workers have to deal with, and we have the know-how and resources to help our members address these issues.”
CUPE is Canada’s largest union, representing over 615,000 members in different sectors, including retirement and long-term care, hospitals, universities, schools, municipalities, social services, transportation and other sectors.
