“There’s a deal to be reached. We just need a willing partner at the table,”
says Local 966 President Mary Jo Falle
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Negotiations between Local 966 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Region of Peel will resume today in an effort to end a strike by more than 900 employees.
“We’re pleased that the Region has agreed to our request to continue negotiating today,” said Mary Jo Falle, President of CUPE 966.
“There’s a deal to be reached. We just need a willing partner at the table,” she added.
Negotiations resumed Monday, following a formal request from the union last week.
Since early May, the Region’s Human Services/Children’s Services Department, which administers Ontario Works, Housing Services and Integrated Business Services, have been on strike for a fair contract. They have since been joined by TransHelp employees, who operate the Region’s accessible transit service, and Public Works employees.
“Our members want to get back to providing quality public services delivered by trained, experienced, hardworking staff. We are very concerned that client needs are not being met,” said Falle.
Falle added that Local 966 was prepared to bargain around the clock to secure “a collective agreement that is fair to residents who expect and depend on quality public services, and the women and men who provide those services.”
