More than three years in the making, new facility a ‘building that demonstrates our vision for a better world,’ says Secretary-Treasurer Charles Fleury
Markham, ON—The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) welcomed dignitaries and well-wishers through the doors of its new Ontario Regional Office in Markham today.
The 68,000 square foot facility, designed by Taylor_Smyth Architects and Edward Wojs Architect working in joint venture, held its grand opening celebration today with a barbecue and open house attended by more than a hundred guests.
“In so many ways, this is a building that demonstrates our vision for a better world,” said Charles Fleury, CUPE’s National Secretary-Treasurer.
“From the materials, furniture and equipment inside, which were manufactured locally to support the regional economy and reduce environmental impacts, to the ergonomical work stations, to the efficient lighting design and plumbing fixtures, our new Regional Office is a statement of the world we know is possible,” he added.
Fleury was joined at the grand opening celebration by CUPE’s Ontario Regional Director Brian Atkinson, and CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn.
The new facility includes large meeting and education rooms with video-conferencing capacity to allow for remote education and seminars, sitting rooms, a fitness facility and outdoor patio, creating a positive and communal work environment. As well, the facility has been designed and engineered to a targeted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standard.
The new Regional Office will house about 75 CUPE staff who provide legal, bargaining, education, communications and administrative support to CUPE Locals and field staff that assist Ontario’s 210,000 CUPE members. As well, CUPE Ontario, the political wing of CUPE in the province, has their offices within the new Regional Office.
