MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 966, Ontario Works Human Services Unit, will return to the bargaining table tomorrow, Saturday, June 2.
With the assistance of a conciliator, CUPE Local 966 and the Region of Peel will meet and try to reach a new contract that is acceptable to both parties.
“We are cautiously optimistic,” said Mary Jo Falle, president of CUPE Local 966. “We have always made it clear that we were prepared to go back to the table and when the Region of Peel made a formal request to meet, we, of course, accepted. The ball is now in their court; we are very interested to hear what they have to say.”
“Our goal is, and always has been, to reach settlements for our workers that are in keeping with what other workers in the Region have received. We’ve had a number of difficult meetings with the employer, not only for Ontario Works, but also in trying to reach a fair and equitable settlement for Public Works and Transhelp,” said Michel Revelin, vice-president of CUPE Local 966.
CUPE Local 966, Public Works Unit, will return to the bargaining table on Sunday in an effort to reach a settlement prior to a strike/lockout date of 12:01 a.m., Monday, June 4.

“It’s time for the politicians who sit on the Region of Peel Council to step up to the plate. They were elected to represent everyone in the community and they are letting down the clients CUPE Local 966 serve, as well as our members who vote too,” said Revelin. “They have a responsibility to tell the Region’s negotiators to settle fair agreements. Workers in their cities received acceptable contracts—why should they allow those working for the Region to be treated differently?”
