PEMBROKE, ON – After two weeks on the picket line, Ontario Works staff in the County of Renfrew – members of CUPE 4989 – are inviting supporters to come out and join them at a rally on Wednesday, May 30.
Renfrew County Council is holding its monthly meeting on the same day and it’s time to let them know that enough is enough – Ontario Works employees want to get back to providing employment services and income supports to assist vulnerable members of our community!
“Every day, we help clients get back on their feet. We need our employer’s support to be able to provide the best service possible and the only way to do that is with a fair collective agreement,” said CUPE 4989 President Ghyslaine Turgeon.
Having been denied the right to speak at the Council meeting in order to address ways to end the strike, CUPE 4989 members have decided that they will not be silenced.
On Wednesday, May 30, CUPE 4989 will be holding a rally where their voices will be heard! Guest speakers will kick off the event and everyone is encouraged to come and tell Renfrew County Council that these workers provide a vital service in our community and it’s time they get a fair deal!

WHERE: 7 & 9 International Drive, Pembroke
WHEN: Wednesday, May 30 at 9:00 a.m. *Picketing starts at 7:00 a.m.!
WHO: Ontario Works staff in the County of Renfrew, members of CUPE 4989
Guest speakers will include CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn, Renfrew and District Labour Council President Sue McSheffrey, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke NDP provincial representative Brian Dougherty as well as a word from CUPE 4989 President Ghyslaine Turgeon.
