MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 966 will return to the bargaining table with the Region of Peel on Tuesday, May 15.
“We responded to Steve Davis, the Acting Director of Human Resources for the Region, saying publicly that they were ‘eager’ to get back to the table,” said Mary Jo Falle, president of Local 966. “We invited them to come back to the table and, while we are pleased to go back, we are very disappointed that it won’t be until Tuesday.
“We made ourselves available through the weekend but, surprisingly, the Region said their bargaining team was not available citing personal, social commitments – so we will meet next week,” Falle explained.
According to the Region of Peel’s own website, one-in-eight families live in poverty; one-in-four female-led, single-parent families, and one-in-three recent immigrant families also live in poverty!
“With alarming statistics such as this, it is mystifying to us why the Region would not want to get back to the table immediately and provide support for these marginalized members of our community,” said Michel Revelin, vice-president of the local.
“All that said, we return to the bargaining table with a positive attitude and believe the talks will be productive,” concluded Revelin.
