“Walk a mile in my shoes” rally tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. is “just the beginning”

WINDSOR, ON – As the finance minister dons the traditional new pair of shoes to deliver an “austerity” cost-cutting budget Tuesday at Queen’s Park, Windsor/Essex social service workers will deliver old, worn shoes to Dwight Duncan at a community “walk a mile in my shoes” event tomorrow (March 25 at 12:15 p.m.); a reminder that many area families are struggling economically.

With unemployment rates already above the provincial average, the last thing Windsor/Essex needs is more job losses, say local social service workers who provide the services area residents rely on in tough economic times. Funding cuts for already under-resourced social services will result in service cuts, program closures and even higher unemployment, they say.

They are warning the finance minister that they will defend services and fight the coming provincial funding cuts, beginning with tomorrow’s (March 26 at 12:15 p.m.) event at Dwight Duncan’s constituency office, 2825 Lauzon Parkway, Unit 211.

They will ask Duncan to walk a mile in the shoes of the thousands of area workers who have lost their jobs. They will urge him not to cut funding for public services like child care, child welfare, developmental services, mental health, and employment and re-training programs that help local families in crisis.
