More job loss and social service cuts coming if Liberals cut program spending
NIAGARA FALLS, ON – Niagara’s already stalled local economy will continue to suffer and unemployment will increase as more people lose their jobs and are left without community supports, if next week’s Ontario budget includes funding and program cuts recommended in the Drummond Report, say labour force advocates.
Niagara Region needs strong social services to help people retrain and get back to work following the loss of 30 per cent of manufacturing jobs in the last decade. However, the Ontario government is looking at reducing funding for these vital services as part of an ill-conceived cost-cutting budget that threatens to stall growth.
At a media conference tomorrow, leaders of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario and the Niagara Workforce Planning Board will highlight what upcoming budget cuts will mean for the Niagara Region. They will also call on MPPs to vote against an austerity budget and in favour of measures to build the economy, create good jobs, and preserve and enhance public services.
