TORONTO, Ont. – Child welfare workers – members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 2316 and the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of Toronto reached a tentative settlement this afternoon.
Maintaining service levels in order to better protect at-risk children and youth from abuse and neglect was a key issue for CUPE 2316 in this round of contract talks.
“In the next few years the child welfare sector is headed for considerable organizational change. We want the best possible futures for vulnerable children and families during this time of uncertainty. That’s why managing caseloads and ensuring supports and staffing levels are maintained is a priority for our members,” said CUPE 2316 president Aubrey Gonsalves.
A recent report by the provincial umbrella group representing Ontario’s 52 child welfare agencies found that 85 per cent of Ontarians strongly support the work of children’s aid societies caring for children and supporting families.
A vote to ratify the tentative settlement is set for October 5.
CUPE 2316 members had voted over 97 per cent in support of strike action. Achieving a tentative settlement averted job action which could have started at 12:01 a.m. Monday, October 3.
