Fred Hahn and CUPE Members to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with trans community for ‘Trans Rights Now’ during Friday’s Trans March
TORONTO, Ont. — Fred Hahn, President the Canadian Union of Public Employees Ontairo (CUPE Ontario) will join with other CUPE members in support of ‘Trans Rights Now’ at tomorrow’s Trans March.
Hahn, the first openly gay leader of a major Canadian union, is promising that CUPE Ontario’s ongoing support for trans rights “won’t stop until every Ontarian—regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity—are seen as equals in every aspect of our society.”
“We will stand with our trans members and with the trans community for as long as it takes, because a better Ontario won’t happen until all of us—gay, trans and straight—can participate fully in the life of this Province and this country,” he added.
CUPE Ontario will have a presence at all three official Pride Marches during the weekend.
“The Labour movement, and specifically CUPE, have always been at the forefront of advancing the cause of equality for LGBT people in Canada. From negotiating spousal benefits in our collective agreements for same-sex couples to supporting and funding court challenges on behalf of trans members, our members have never shied away from doing the right thing, where governments and others were either indifferent or hostile,” said Hahn.
“The rights we helped secure have been hard-won, but we have seen they are also fragile. Bill C-389, which Parliament passed earlier in the year, would have protected the rights of transgender and transsexual Canadians, had it not been killed by the unelected, Conservative-controlled Senate. And that is why CUPE Members will continue to stand alongside their trans sisters and brothers, today, and every day,” he added.
