Staff at Strathaven Life Centre (members of CUPE 5110) in Bowmanville recently melded a festive celebration with advocacy for improved hands-on care for long-term care residents. Along with their employer, the CUPE local organized a BBQ to recognize Residents’ Appreciation Day on June 29 as a part of June seniors’ month events.
The registered practical nurses, personal support workers, and dietary staff were joined by residents and their family and CUPE Ontario secretary-treasurer Candace Rennick at the celebration BBQ.
The members of CUPE 5110 are working with many others province-wide, including CUPE Ontario, in an effort to urge the province to improve funding for long-term care and to bring in a minimum standard of 3.5 hours daily care to improve residents’ quality of life.
Lisa Barkwell, CUPE 5110 president, thanked family members, residents, and staff for attending the event and in helping to achieve a 3.5 hour care standard.
With music, festive decorations, a decorative hat contest and a special 3.5 hours of care cake, the message was clear that a day for staff to show appreciation for residents’ accomplishments is equally as important as the advocacy they do on an on-going basis on behalf of residents to improve daily hands-on care standards.
“While we celebrate today, we are also pushing the province to enact a minimum standard of care of 3.5 hours per resident per day and the funding commitment to back it up,” said Rennick who lauded both the CUPE local and the Strathaven employer for organizing the celebration where those attending were encouraged to sign post cards urging the province to enact a 3.5 hour standard.
