Sisters and Brothers

This Thursday, December 16th, is the 1st meeting of the new Toronto City Council.

Two key issues are on the table:

(i) designate the TTC an essential service (this is a critical issue as it takes away labour’s right to free collective bargaining, a right upheld by the Supreme Court as a fundamental right of all Canadians) and

(ii) request for an apology for media article “Too Asian” being brought forward by Councillor Mike Layton, seconded by Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam (this is in relation to a recent article by Macleans Magazine entitled “Too Asian” in reference to The University of Toronto and The University of British Columbia).  Victoria city council recently passed a motion to write a letter to Macleans expressing concern for the article’s title  and that “some of the content may be perceived as racist in nature”.  Councillor Layton’s motion is calling for the same.

The Toronto Council meeting begins at 9:30am – Mayor Ford is rallying his supporters to be in attendance.  It is critical CUPE have a presence as well – we encourage as many locals as possible to attend, beginning in the early morning and then throughout the day.
