Every December 6th, Canadians remember the tragic events of the Montreal Massacre, when 14 female engineering students were murdered at L’Ecole Polytechnique.  One of the women killed was a member of CUPE.  Two years after that terrible event, the Parliament of Canada declared December 6th a National Day of Remembrance and Action to End Violence Against Women.

While we still mourn the loss of that terrible night in 1989, women and men across the country unite on this date to draw attention to the ongoing violence and inequality that many women continue to face in Canada.  And while we mourn we also organize for change.

Early in the New Year, CUPE Ontario’s Women’s Committee will host their annual conference, and this year’s theme of ‘Securing Economic Justice for Women’ highlights the importance of addressing gender inequality in the community, the workplace and at the bargaining table.
