The United Nations declared World AIDS Day in 1988 to highlight its campaign to eradicate the virus and find effective treatments for people living with HIV/AIDS. While many advances have been made in treatments, the virus continues to spread.  In Canada, while overall new HIV infections have declined, new infections continue to climb among First Nations and other populations where poverty and lack of access to health services are issues.

Every day, CUPE members work across Ontario to ensure people living with HIV/AIDS are able to live lives free of discrimination, while getting the supports they need to be healthy.  HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, thrives on ignorance.  So does discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.  We hope you will take some time to learn more about World AIDS Day events in your community and around the world.
