Community group urges Kingston council and mayor
Rally tomorrow before council votes
KINGSTON, Ont. When it comes to making Kingston a leader in sustainability initiatives and local food production, a decision to buy hospital meals from a food factory in Toronto takes the city in the wrong direction, say members of a new community-based group who are urging city council to support a motion at tomorrow’s council meeting that tells Kingston General Hospital (KGH) to not outsource its foodservices to a global company.
The motion Kingston City Council will debate at its meeting November 16 states that
Kingston City Council strongly encourage the Board of Governors of KGH to not outsource the provision of food services at KGH at its November 23 meeting and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Board of Governors of KGH.
The local campaign (more information on http://www.kingstonfoodfight.ca/ is picking up steam.
More than 1700 emails asking the mayor and council to support the motion and Kingston’s goal of being Canada’s most sustainable city have flooded city hall through the campaign website action. Also 2500 Kingston residents have signed letters and post cards calling on the KGH to nix the deal that would see factory-made food being trucked to Kingston from a plant outside of Toronto.
Members of the local food coalition will rally at 6:30 p.m. outside Kingston Town Hall before the start of tomorrow’s council meeting.
