PRESS
INVITED FOR BREAKFAST AT MUNICIPAL ELECTION FORUM OCTOBER 8TH
OTTAWA,
Ont. Members of the
press are invited to take part in a breakfast together with 86 City of Ottawa
municipal election candidates, members of some Community Associations and
invited guests at the municipal election forum on October 8th in the Rideau
Room at the Sheraton Hotel from 8 a.m. to noon.
The subject
of the forum will be Public-Private Partnerships. 2010 International John
Galbraith Award winner John Loxley who recently published The Political
Economy of Public-Private Partnerships and Pierre J. Hamel who wrote an
extensive report commissioned by the Canadian Federation of Municipalities on
Public Private Partnerships will launch the event with a brief presentation of
their findings.
Following
their presentations, there will be a question and answer session in which
panelists will field questions from the audience after which the candidates
will be invited to express their own views on the subject. There will be ample
opportunities for the press to interview panelists and candidates. Simultaneous
translation will be provided.
We want to
encourage a truly informed discussion on the issue of privatization of public
services, says Brian Madden, President of Local 503 representing 7,000 City
employees, in order that candidates who could potentially be elected to City
Council can make informed decisions when such issues arise at City Hall.
CUPE Local
503 represents a wide range of municipal workers – including paramedics, those
providing services to seniors, the homeless and families with low incomes, as
well as childcare, public health, public works, library and recreation workers
to name just a few.
If you are interested in attending the breakfast
and would like to reserve a seat at this event, please call or email Jean-Marc
Bézaire, CUPE National Representative at 613-293-8163 or [email protected]
