Henri Giroux, Regional Vice-President for Northern Ontario, member of CUPE’s National Executive Board (NEB), is running for municipal council in Powassan, Ontario

Henri Giroux was born in North Bay, Ontario, and raised in the small town of Corbeil with his 14 brothers and sisters, and he’s the father of five children. Starting out in such a large family gave Henri a unique and very early understanding of the word “community”.

“Public Services are so vital to maintaining healthy communities in the North,” said Giroux. “As a councilor in Powassan, I look forward to defending public services and promoting our community’s traditional social and democratic values.”

The Powassan resident has been a labour and community activist since 1979, and currently sits on CUPE’s National Executive Board, as Regional Vice-President for Northern Ontario. Henri was president of CUPE Local 146 for 26 years, representing long-term care workers at Cassellholme Home for the Aged in North Bay. In the past he was co-chair of the North Bay Health Coalition and a provincial NDP candidate. Henri also served as President of the North Bay CUPE Council for the past ten years and President of the North Bay and District Labour Council for the past three years. Henri also holds a seat on the CUPE Ontario Executive Board as the fourth Vice President.

“I have had the opportunity to organize and participate in many campaigns supporting health care, anti-privatization, and banning bottled water, among others. In my community we are faced with many challenges, and I look forward to representing my constituents and ensuring that Powassan becomes a vibrant and progressive community where all can thrive.”
