CUPE Ontario President & Secretary Treasurer joined
hundreds of CUPE members in Peterborough on Monday at a noon hour rally held at
the Peterborough Regional Health Centre to demand that MPP Jeff Leal Defend the
hospital services in the community of Peterborough.

The rally was organized by members of the Ontario Council
of Hospital Unions and specifically, the locals of OCHU Area 4.

The rally was organized in response to the Hospitals
plans to eliminate almost 252 jobs while slashing vital health services.

Services being affected include the closure of the
downtown women’s health centre, dozens of hospital beds are being closed and an
untold number of beds to remain unusable because they will not be staffed.  In addition there will be cuts to ICU,
medical and surgical beds, infection control and housekeeping.

Members from across the Province arrived by the bus load
to show their support and solidarity to hospital workers.

Buses arrived from as far away as Niagara, Sudbury, North
Bay, Ottawa and Cornwall.

The Peterborough rally was the first of a series of
escalating demonstrations against the Liberal Governments Health Policies.

The next demo will be held in Toronto in November.  Watch the cupe.on.ca website for more
details.
