TORONTO, Ont. – The union representing City of Toronto outside workers has launched an advertising campaign to introduce residents to some of the thousands of public employees who provide vital quality services every day.

“In your neighbourhood, at your service” is the theme of transit shelter ads and billboards that have popped up around the city. They feature four city workers:

• Aislinn Caron, a city gardener
• Mathan Karunaratnam, a Toronto Water plant technician, who is responsible for maintaining safe drinking water
• Tony Ramdeen, a collector who picks up garbage, recyclables and organics
• Rahul Singh, a Toronto EMS paramedic and founder of Global Medic, who was recently named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.

“We want to let the community know that our members are proud of the work they do to help keep our city clean, safe and beautiful,” said Mark Ferguson, president of Toronto Civic Employees Union (TCEU) Local 416 CUPE. “These are real people delivering real services that matter to the people of Toronto.”

The transit shelter ads will be in place until July 4, and billboards until July 18.

TCEU Local 416 CUPE represents about 6,000 City of Toronto workers at Toronto EMS, Toronto Water, solid waste, animal services, parks, fleet and transportation, Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Parking Authority and Toronto Port Authority. The union also has members at Enwave, York Community Services and Yorktown Child and Family Centre.
