TORONTO, Ont. – CUPE Local 2 President Mike Santos has decided to take a leave of absence from his position on the union executive pending the outcome of an investigation and legal proceedings against him. Current Vice-President Mike McKee will take on the president’s role in the interim.

“We presume innocence until guilt is proven,” said CUPE National Representative Peter Paulekat. “However, Brother Santos has decided that a leave is appropriate at this time.” CUPE has a duty to represent all members in matters related to employment and will do what is necessary to ensure Mr. Santos’ rights are protected, he said.

There will be no further comment from the union while the matter is being investigated or is before the courts.

CUPE Local 2 represents about 500 signal maintenance, communications and electrical workers at the Toronto Transit Commission.
